An Actor Prepares.... To Live With Diabetes
Cecily, 22, NYC, NY. Diagnosed in June 2006. Uses Humalog and Lantus. Cecily is an actress, she loves to read and loves to laugh. She started her blog to get to know others with type and vent about the daily highs and lows (literally and figuratively). When there is a cure, the first thing Cecily will do is eat as much candy as she wants!
Artificially Sweetened:
Art-Sweet, 31, "North of the Mason-Dixon Line and East of the Mississippi." Was diagnosed on Jan. 1, 1986. She uses Minimed 722. She is sarcastic, her second toe is longer than her big toe, she likes to stick on her tongue to catch snowflakes whenever it snows, and she has a cat with diabetes. She started her blog to share experiences with other diabetes and infertility-related communities, and because "it's my party, and I'll whine when I want to." When there is a cure, the first thing she plans to do is get cured, and then start a foundation that takes the money we save from not buying supplies and gives it to people in third-world countries so that everyone can have the cure!
Bernard's Blog:
Bernard, 47, Massachusetts. Diagnosed with Type 1 on September 10, 1972 and he wears an insulin pump. Bernard is Irish and has incredible optimism. He actively works for a diabetes cure. He has taken three trips to China. He started his blog to express himself. But he let his blog slide for a couple years and now he is back again because there's a lot happening in "diabetes-land". When there is a cure, Bernard plans to "get down on my knees and thank my great and glorious God."
BetterCell:
BetterCell, New York City. Diagnosed at age 6. Uses Lantus and Novolog. BetterCell studies martial arts and he enjoys listening to great music and cooking. BetterCell started his blog to share information and knowledge and because he enjoys writing as a form of communication and art. When there is a cure, BetterCell says he will have more room in his apartment without all the diabetes supplies, but he isn't sure if it will change him that much.
CuriousGirl:
Nicole, 32, Massachusetts. Diagnosed June 1981. Wears a Cozmo pump with Novolog. She has trained her cat to be a dog, is terrified of spiders and failure, and thinks the inventor of the public bathroom must have been a truly sick individual. Nicole started her blog because she likes to write and because she was inspired by Kerri (Six Until Me) to write about her diabetes experience. When there is a cure, Nicole thinks she might puke from the excitement.

Diabetes Talkfest Blog:
Gina, 30, New York. Diagnosed on November 25, 2000. Wears an insulin pump. Gina is a video gamer, an artist and graphic/web designer, and the co-founder of DiabetesTalkfest.com. She also loves to play with her little cousins and then give them back to their mom! Gina started her blog to vent and share information about diabetes. When there is a cure, Gina will cry and then eat a HUGE piece of chocolate cake without guilt.
Diabetic Princess:
Bethany, 20, New York. Diagnosed April 2002. Wears a Minimed Paradigm pump named Grover. Bethany has 5 tattoos, her favorite color is green and she has a hamster named Oscar. She started her blog because she loves to write. When there is a cure, Bethany says the first thing she will do is cry.
Diabetic Success:
Joy, 13, New York. Diagnosed on December 8, 2006. Uses a Minimed insulin pump. Joy loves babysitting and sports, and does karate. She started her blog because she believes diabetes is a strength, not a disability and she wants to help other people. When there is a cure, she plans to get the cure and then start an organization to help others get it.
Dr. Jekyll and Mrs. Low:
Val - a 39-year-old Type 1 diabetic from New York who was originally thought to be a Type 2 before being properly diagnosed. Uses her blog to "vent about the frustrations involved" in having diabetes.
Hotel California:
Travis, 20, New York. Diagnosed December 2006. Uses Lantus and Novolog, going on the pump soon. Travis's nose is kind of crooked, he grew up 9,000 ft. about sea level, and he's an American Studies major. Travis started his blog to find his voice, iron out opinions, stay connected, and learn new things. When there is a cure, Travis says he'll "Wish I hadn't wasted so much time on this almighty bullshit."
How's the DB?:
Melissa- a 24-year-old Type 1 diabetic from New York City. Diagnosed with diabetes in 2003, a week before her 21st birthday. Melissa has struggled extensively with managing her own diabetes care, but she recently joined the Naomi Berrie Diabetes Center in NYC. Her story was featured on Diabetes Mine's Holy @#$! Amazing Stories, Vol. 1.
A Gluten-Free Guide:
Catherine, 29, New York City, NY. Diagnosed in August 1989 and uses an insulin pump. Has celiac disease. Catherine is a yoga instructor, speaks Italian and has an obsession with new glasses. Catherine started her blog to share links and resources. When there is a cure, Catherine will throw away all her medical supplies and put her closet space to good use.
Good Diabetic
Claire, 22, Cambridge, MA. Diagnosed in January 1997. Uses a Minimed Paradigm 722. Claire can jump on a pogo stick and can do a pull up, which she considers a very real, important accomplishment in her life. Claire started her blog because she wanted a way to organize and share her thoughts about diabetes. She also thinks it will help with accountability and record-keeping. When there is a cure, the first thing Claire will do is stop worrying.
It's My Life People:
Jane, type 1 with Lantus and Humalog pen was dx'd in 1985. Lives in Huntington, NY. She is a serial mover: onwards and upwards, can't type the word "the" without a space between the h and e, is allergic to chintz, and is way older than she looks. Started blogging to record the frustrations and occasional rewards of the daily diabetes balancing act. When there is a cure she plans to elbow her way to the head of the line.
Kate's Quest:
Kate, 26, New York. Diagnosed in February 1981 and wears a Minimed 512. Kate loves crime shows, she is working on becoming a diabetes educator and she loves singing along to her favorite music. She started her blog because she loved reading other Barton Alumni blogs and thought it would be a great way to share feelings about diabetes and learn from others. It also got her journaling again. When there is a cure, Kate says she'll "give thanks for it."
Kiss My Sweet Sticks:
Julie - 33-year-old Type 1 diabetic, diagnosed 24 years ago. Wears a pump and uses Metformin. Lives in Conneticut where she works as a Sign Language interpreter. She loves to craft and is addicted to DVD series. She started blogging because a friend of hers that passed away had a blog and she clicked on the advertisment and arrived at Blogspot then decided to search for Diabetes and found long lost camp friends and interesting facts and decided to give it a try herself to cope with her complications. When there is a cure, she plans to eat a HUGE ice cream sunday then try to not think about anything related to Diabetes at all.
Managing the Sweetness Within:
Lyrehca, 35, Massachusetts. Diagnosed on August 8, 1977. Treatment includes an insulin pump and exercise. Lyrehca loves to read and surf the internet and she gets paid to do both at her job! Lyrehca started her blog to chronicle what it is like to be a Type 1 woman trying to get, and going through, her first pregnancy. When there is a cure, the first thing Lyrehca will do is a lot of background research on scientific studies to make sure this is the real cure, and not some short-term solution.

My Diabetes CGMS:
Gary, 47, a Type 1 diabetic since 1998. Lives in Massachusetts. Wears an insulin pump and a DexCom CGM. Gary was a former nuclear reactor operator in the Navy from 1977-1983 and served aboard the U.S.S. Eisenhower. He is a member of the Knights of Colubus, a Catholic charitable organization. He was also a Boy Scount in Indiana, where his first and last camping experience was dubbed "Operation Icicle." Gary wanted to start his blog to help him focus more on his diabetes, help other and also compare notes with others on the CGMS. The first thing Gary will do when there is a cure is celebrate with his family!
One Sweet Adventure:
Emily, 24, Vermont. Diagnosed on October 8, 1994. Uses a Cozmo insulin pump. Emily doesn't min getting dirty, makes "vroom" noises when driving her car, and likes to dance around her living in room in socks whenever she can. Emily started her blog because she finally realized that she was lurking and commenting so much that she thought maybe she actually did have enough to say to start a blog. When there is a cure, Emily will do a little dance and not worry about going low.
Orsa Aetas:
Mel, 25, New England. Diagnosed August 22, 1987. Uses Novolog in a Minimed pump. Mel loves peanut butter, she’s allergic to Lantus and on lazy Sunday afternoons in the fall she will curl up on the couch with her knitting and watch the Pats! Mel started her blog to verbalize her dealings with diabetes and not only gather support from the community, but contribute as well. When there is a cure, Mel envisions the scene from office space where they beat the photocopier. Except she will use hammers instead of a baseball bat and the target will be her many glucose meters.
Pump Lover:
Liz, 19, Massachusetts. Diagnosed in February 2006. Uses a Minimed insulin pump. Liz loves the Red Soz, the beach and her friends. Liz started her blog as a way to share her story. When there is a cure, the first thing she plans to do is try and help comfort people with other diseases that haven’t been cured.
Pumplandia:
Violet - 34-year-old diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in October 2004. Lives in Brooklyn and is on a new pump named Nellie (who replaced the beloved Charlene).
Scott's Weblog:
Scott, 37, New York, NY. Diagnosed on July 24, 1976 and uses Apidra and NPH. Scott has an older sister with Type 1, who was diagnosed at age 4 in 1969. Scott and his sister are the only ones in the extended family with Type 1. He has lived in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Delaware, California, Washington State and Florida. He started his blog because he enjoys communicating about more objective news related to diabetes, which is seldom found in major press outlets. When there is a cure, the first thing Scott plans on doing is going on a drinking binge since alcohol and insulin make for a dangerous combination.
Screw-a-betic:
Matt, 39, New Hampshire. Diagnosed in October 2004. Uses Lantus and Huamlog. He is a father of four, has published poems in literary magazines, and almost died from undiagnosed diabetes. Matt started his blog to deal with the stress in the wake of a traumatic near-death onset of diabetes. When there is a cure, the first thing Matt will do is enter a pie-eating contest.
Six Until Me:
Kerri, 27, Connecticut. Diagnosed on Sep. 11, 1986. Wears a Minimed 512 insulin pump. She likes a well-crafted piece of writing, trouble-free Volkswagons and walnuts. Kerri started her blog because she was on a search to find writing by people with diabetes to "confirm I wasn't alone." When there is a cure, the first thing Kerri plans to do is sign up.
Sweet Nina:
Nina, 27, New York City. Diagnosed on January 28, 2000. Uses an Animas pump. Nina has two cousins with Type 1, and a maternal great-grandfather who died of complications in the 1930s. She went to college in Pennsylvania. She loves red win. Nina started her blog because the other blogs have inspired her to focus on her diabetes control and hopefully she can help someone else out there too. When there is cure, she wouldn’t do much because diabetes has helped her live pretty healthy, but she thinks she would probably have a big fat bowl of pasta.
ThisIsMe:
Nicole, 24, Boston. Diagnosed July 7, 1986 and wears an insulin pump. Nicole is fellow Barton Girl, having attended Clara Barton Camp for 11 years. She has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a semi-secret ambition is to go to med school and become a pediatrician. Nicole started her blog to give and receive help around living with diabetes. When there is a cure, Nicole says, "I think I'll eat until I get sick and then enjoy the fact that I don't have to test or take insulin.
This Is My Life:
Megan - 20 years old, pumping insulin. Diagnosed October, 2005. Pumps with a cozmo pump her CDs are in alphabetical order, she likes camping, archery, piano, and technology stuff. She has played piano, violin, viola, recorder, and guitar at various points in her life. She started a blog because it's the cool thing to do. When there is a cure she wants to take apart her pump and see the inside and how it is put together.
Tom, 18, Philadelphia, PA. Diagnosed May 4, 2006. Uses an Animas pump with Novolog. Tom is a computer science major, a drummer and a fraternal twin. Tom started his blog because he had been a lurker for about a year and finally decided to take the plunge and join the O.C. When there is a cure, Tom will stop counting and eat a banana split sundae covered in hot fudge.
